About Us

UNESCO Chair Programme

The UNESCO Chair Programme is a global initiative that aims to promote international inter-university cooperation, share knowledge, and develop collaborative work in the fields of education, science, culture, and communication. The program was launched in 1992 and has since established over 950 UNESCO Chairs and 45 UNITWIN Networks in 120 countries.

The Chairs and Networks are a network of universities around the world that support UNESCO’s work in education, natural and social sciences, culture, and communication, to help address pressing challenges and contribute to the development of their societies. The Chairs teams contribute at each stage of UNESCO’s work, from the exploration of emerging issues, through the development of international normative instruments to the implementation of policy recommendations at the national level. They also bring together partners in academia, civil society, local communities, and policy-makers in dialogue for project implementation. Furthermore, each Chair endeavors to spread the humanistic values of UNESCO through teaching activities.

APU – UNESCO Chair

The UNESCO Chair on Harnessing Innovations in Technology to Support Teachers & Quality Learning is a program aimed at promoting inclusive and equitable education for people in developing economies by leveraging disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and Big Data & Analytics.

The Chairholder, Prof. Dr. Abtar Darshan Singh, drives research, training, and knowledge-sharing initiatives on harnessing innovations in technology to support teachers and quality in teaching and learning in Malaysia as well as developing economies in Asia, Africa, and other parts of the world 1. The Chair aims to equip teachers and professionals in education with state-of-the-art knowledge and tools to enhance hybrid learning, which has become increasingly important in the post-pandemic learning context.
