The Commonwealth of Learning (COL) was established in 1987 by Commonwealth Heads of Government “… to create and widen access to opportunities for learning, making use of the potential offered by distance education and by the application of communication technologies to education.”
The APU UNESCO Chair maintains a close working relationship with the Commonwealth of Learning to support and enhance the role of COL in its worldwide endeavors.
In 2022, through the UNESCO Chair, the Digital Learning Hub (DLH) of APU was appointed by the Commonwealth of Learning to plan, organise, and conduct a mentoring project on Blended Learning for Technical and Vocational Education & Training (TVET). Participants for this project were from Trinidad & Tobago, Zambia, and Kenya. Over 120 TVET trainers from these countries were mentored over a 5-month period on the Design, Development & Delivery of Blended Learning for their technical courses.
DLH also created a complete course for COL entitled Learning Designs for Emerging Learning Environments, which has been published under the COL Oasis platform as an open Educational Resource (OER) in 2023. This 7-chapter course is a self-learning course designed to guide educators into the Next Generation Digital Learning Environment (NGDLE).
Working in collaboration with the English Language Training Center (ELTC) of the Ministry of Education, Malaysia, The UNESCO Chair has supported the creation of Digital Resources for Orang Asli under the Literacy Program for Orang Asli and Pribumi Children (LPOAPC).
In addition to this program, APU UNESCO Chair also secured some funding to equip teachers in Gua Musang Kelantan with Digital Literacy Skills. Together with ELTC, and the Kelantan State Education Department, the UNESCO Chair conducted a workshop entitled Digitally Intelligent Indigenous Youth (DI2Y). This project aims to train schoolteachers to become trainers in their own right, empowered to carry out digital literacy training for the indigenous community in and around Gua Musang, Kelantan.
