On Saturday, 8th July 2023, Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU / APIIT) together with Khoo Teck Puat Hospital Singapore, made history by running the 1st Artificial Intelligence powered Academic Writing workshop. This workshop was facilitated by Dr. Vaikunthan Rajaratnam of Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and the Digital Learning Hub of APU.
The highly interactive workshop saw participants from a wide range of faculty from APU learning how to leverage the power of AI to aid in their academic writing pursuits.
Dr Vaikunthan expertly introduced the participants to a wide range of AI tools perfectly suited to enhancing academic writing. He showcased these tools and their functionalities that could assist in idea generation, drafting, editing, and finalizing academic papers.
Participants were guided through each section of an academic paper based on the IMRD (Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion) framework. Participants were encouraged to complete each section before moving on to the next. For each section, participants were shown which AI tools were most applicable and how to use them.
By the end of the workshop, all 50 academics had a very clear idea of the mechanics of using AI to assist in writing academic papers, and most of them had almost completed the work on their papers. 
Outcomes from this visionary workshop include clinics on academic writing and the setting up of AI-Write, a Society of Academic Writers Empowered by AI.
